Old Brass: The Font That Speaks with Power

There’s a moment in every campaign when you realize the font could make or break the message. I was deep into finalizing visuals for a new product launch, and as I reviewed the mockups on my phone, I knew something wasn’t quite right. The text felt too plain, too safe. It wasn’t grabbing attention the way it needed to. That’s when I pulled up Old Brass.

Old Brass is more than just a display font—it’s a statement. With its bold, assertive style, it exudes energy and confidence. It’s the kind of typeface that commands attention without shouting. Its thick, textured strokes give it a vintage yet modern feel, making it perfect for campaigns that want to blend retro charm with contemporary flair.

The Moment of Clarity

I was working on a limited-time sale for a fitness brand, and the goal was to create urgency while maintaining a strong visual identity. The initial design used a standard sans serif font, which looked clean but lacked personality. As I switched to Old Brass for the headline, everything changed. The text immediately stood out, drawing the eye and reinforcing the message of speed and performance.

Old Brass works exceptionally well in high-impact scenarios like sale announcements, product teasers, and promotional banners. Its assertive nature makes it ideal for headlines, callouts, and campaign labels. When paired with a clean sans serif font like Montserrat or Lato, it creates a striking contrast that enhances readability while keeping the design visually engaging.

Where Old Brass Shines

Old Brass is incredibly versatile. I’ve used it across multiple platforms, from Instagram posts and YouTube thumbnails to email banners and landing page headers. On social media, it adds a sense of authority and urgency, especially when used in bold, short phrases like “Limited Time Only” or “Sale Ends Soon.”

For YouTube thumbnails, Old Brass helps the title stand out against busy backgrounds. It’s also great for webinar banners and course launches, where the message needs to be clear and compelling at a glance. In digital ads, it ensures the headline is memorable and easy to read, even on small screens.

One of my favorite uses was for a branded content series promoting an online shop. By using Old Brass for the main titles and a sleek sans serif font for supporting text, I created a cohesive look that reinforced brand identity while ensuring clarity and engagement.

Readability Matters

While Old Brass is powerful, I always consider readability, especially on mobile devices and in fast-scrolling feeds. I found that using it for short headlines and key messages worked best, while leaving supporting text to other fonts. This approach maintains visual hierarchy and ensures the message isn’t lost in the noise.

Old Brass performs well on both dark and light backgrounds, though I recommend testing it in different contexts to ensure legibility. For image overlays or video intros, it holds up well, even when scaled down. I also make sure to check the font’s file formats and licensing before using it in client campaigns or branded content.

Font Pairing & Design Strategy

Old Brass pairs beautifully with a variety of fonts. A clean sans serif like Montserrat or Futura balances its boldness, while a serif font like Georgia or Cinzel adds sophistication. For a more creative look, pairing it with a script or handwritten font can add character, though this should be done sparingly to avoid overwhelming the design.

I often use Old Brass as a decorative title or logo-style text, complemented by simpler typography for body copy. This strategy ensures that the design remains focused and effective, whether it’s for a social media post, a website banner, or a print ad.

When designing for Pinterest, I’ve used Old Brass for pin titles, making them stand out in a sea of images. For Instagram, it’s perfect for quote graphics and product highlights, where the text needs to be both readable and impactful.

Practical Tips for Using Old Brass

Old Brass isn’t just a font—it’s a tool for creating powerful, memorable designs. Whether you’re launching a product, promoting a sale, or building a brand, it has the ability to elevate your message and make it stand out in a crowded digital space.
